In this course, students will use the inner barks of plant fibers such as hemp, flax, kozo or gampi. The inner barks have been precooked in soda ash, hand pounded into pulp, and blended for pulling sheets of paper.
I will teach you how to make your own recycled paper at home for cards, art, invitations, books, or other fun projects. We will use simple papermaking techniques that you can do at home using an ordinary kitchen blender, and other household items.
We'll use cookie cutters and stencils to make shaped papers and you can also try embedding/inclusions. Students are encouraged to bring dried plants, seeds, yarn and glitter if they would like to add it to their paper. This is a fun and eco-friendly process perfect for all experience levels and backgrounds.
Notes: Papermaking is a wet process. Shoes that cover the foot must be worn to work in the studio. Wear shoes that can get wet. Bring an apron if you choose.
All supplies and equipment for making paper are included in the class, and you will end the course with paper and a screen to make paper at home.
Paper takes at least 48 hours to dry. I will mail your papers to you, you can expect to receive it via USPS within 1-2 weeks from the course date. While papermaking can be adapted to personal needs, be advised that when making paper you will use your muscles, especially back, core and arm muscles.
